Description of the role:

Would you like to make a real difference to the lives of adults with learning difficulties in their own homes and in the community?

In the Harrogate area we have some residential units that you would visit and bringing new friendships and experiences to people. Volunteers are needed to offer a small amount of time to support people to get out and about, doing everyday activities such as shopping, going to the pub and cinema, walking etc. We aim to skill match to people e.g. photography, cookery, gardening. Time is very flexible and people with physical and learning disabilities are welcome. The role would involve shadowing existing members of staff as they support people with disabilities to maintain as independent life as possible whist encouraging people to seek new creative opportunities:

Volunteer Support worker duties include: Assisting someone with their finances; Supporting someone to the Cinema, shopping, pub, meal out; Assisting someone with their care needs; Being an advocate for people; Sharing skills.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

No formal qualifications but you should have enthusiasm, commitment and life experience. If you have any particular interests such as craft, needlevolunteer, cookery, gardening, music and computing, we really need you. The only skill needed is a strong value base (not seeing a person with a disability as a second class citizen).

Locally we support people in Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough. We build our support around each person providing everything from 24 hour care to helping someone live in their own flat.
