The Friendly Faces of Harrogate and Ripon

The Friendly Faces of Harrogate and Ripon

Severe arthritus led to Angela taking early retirement and after she suffered a fall in 2015 she struggled to get out and about. Because she lives in a rural area with no family nearby she began to feel isolated. It was the friendly faces of Ripon & Rural Wellbeing Services' volunteer befrienders who stepped in to visit Angela.

The team of volunteers pay regular social visits to people around the Ripon area who have a long term health condition or have suffered a bereavement and don't have family in the area. The volunteers pop round for a cup of tea and a chat and occassionally take people on short local trips out to attend a lunch club or maybe the hairdressers.

'I don't know what I would do without them'

There are lots of fantastic volunteer schemes like this one in our district and they really need new volunteers to come forward. Befriending is not only an opportunity to make a real difference to someone's life. It is also very sociable offering the opportunity to build a friendship with the person you visit and to meet fellow volunteers and the people they visit at social events. Volunteer Coordinators provide full training and support for befrienders. They also get to know you first so they can match you up with someone who has shared interests.

If you are interested in becoming one of Harrogate and Ripons friendly faces these are just a few of the charities currently looking for befrienders:
