Ripon and Rural Voluntary Car Driving Service

Serving the areas of Ripon, Pateley Bridge and Masham

What is the Voluntary Car Driving Service?
The service is managed by Harrogate & Ripon CVS from Community House in Ripon. It operates in the Ripon area and is available principally to those who are elderly or disabled and are unable to access public transport.
Journeys may be for such things as:

• Appointments at the hospital, doctors or dentist etc
• Visits to day centres
• Trips to visit a sick relative
• Shopping trips
• Hairdressing appointment

Who are the drivers?
Volunteers are over 21, with at least three years driving experience. All our drivers are volunteers and use their own vehicles. They are interviewed and references are obtained along with a disclosure and barring check.

How do I book a Volunteer Driver?

Get in touch with Malcolm Compton (Service Co-ordinator) when you need to arrange a trip. Malcolm will
match your needs with the availability of a volunteer car driver.  You will always be told who to expect and the time of the driver’s arrival. The driver will take you to your destination and either wait for you or return to collect you and take you back home at the time you have requested.

How much will it cost?
Our drivers give their time free but there is a mileage charge to cover fuel and to help towards the running costs of their vehicle. The mileage charge starts and ends at the volunteer’s home and is usually payable directly to the driver. There is also a £1 booking fee to help cover our administration expenses.

If you receive benefits you may be able to get help with the cost of travel to and from hospital for NHS treatment. Make enquiries at the hospital you are attending or with Social Services.

How much notice do I need to give?
We ask for a minimum of two working days' notice to allow us time to find an available volunteer driver.
